According to The World Health Organisation (WHO) burnout is a syndrome conceptualised as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterised by three dimensions:
It has to be said, in today’s modern and fast-paced world that burnout is on the rise for business owners and employees. Because of this, we have compiled a list of ways to avoid burnout in the workplace as an employee.
The most important item on this list is seeking healthy connections when you need it. If your employer doesn’t know what is going on for you then they can’t provide the extra resources, information and strategies to support you when necessary. In light of the rising cases of burnout in the workplace, employers in general are becoming more supportive of a holistic approach which identifies and promotes employee wellbeing in the workplace.
Stress and overwhelm affects different people at different stages and what might be energising for one employee might be exhausting for the next. With this in mind it’s vitally important to know your own boundaries and other peoples and stick to them. Setting boundaries gives you the space you need to do your job effectively without the risk of colleagues, projects and workload overstepping the mark.
The truth is that ‘good enough’ is good enough and there are very few things in the workplace that need total perfectionism. Letting go of this will free up your time and your mental load. Perfectionism can sometimes mask feelings of imposter syndrome so this could be worth exploring too. Similarly, trying to control too much or letting others control you to a large degree can also cause burnout. Try letting go of control, delegating tasks or setting clear boundaries if you are experiencing someone in the workplace micromanaging you.
We hope this blog has set you on the right path to begin to conquer burnout if you are in the stages of it or help prevent burnout in the future for you.
