Why Hiring in 2025 Feels Tough and How Smart UK Employers Are Adapting

by: Jonathan Shepherd-Stubbs

November 17, 2025

If it feels like finding great people has become harder lately, we don’t think you’re imagining it! Across the UK, businesses of all sizes are feeling the pinch. From retail and logistics to tech and finance, the talent market is shifting fast and sometimes the old ways of recruiting just aren’t so effective anymore.

A Perfect Storm for Hiring

The UK jobs market has been on a rollercoaster since the pandemic. We’ve seen record employment levels (until lately), shifting worker priorities and now with economic uncertainty and rapid AI adoption, companies are having to rethink how they attract, hire and retain staff.

There is one big change – Candidates are more selective than ever.

Job seekers aren’t just chasing pay rises; they’re looking for flexibility, meaningful work and stability. Many are even prioritising company culture and work-life balance over big salaries.

For employers, that means competition is fierce and not just for skills, but for attention.

Hybrid Work Isn’t always a Perk – It can be a Dealbreaker

Remote and hybrid working are currently not just fringe benefits. According to recent UK labour surveys, nearly 4 in 10 professionals would turn down a job that required them to be in the office full-time. (It remains to be seen whether this trend will reverse over time).

If your business still expects everyone at their desks five days a week, you could be missing out on top talent before you even start. Some employers are offering flexibility, whether that’s hybrid patterns, flexible start/finish times, or compressed weeks and shouting about it in their job adverts in order to attract the top talent.

Obviously not every industry type benefits from remote or hybrid working – in some cases, the opposite – but a level of flexibility is likely to have a positive impact on hiring.

The AI Factor: Threat or Opportunity?

Another major theme for 2025 is the rise of AI in recruitment. Some UK businesses are already using AI tools to help with screening, skills matching and even candidate engagement.

The truth is of course, AI is only as good as the people behind it. While it can speed up admin and spot patterns in data, it can’t replace human judgment or relationship-building. Employers who combine tech efficiency with human empathy are winning the hiring race.

So, if you’re considering AI in your hiring process, think of it as an assistant, not a replacement.

Employer Brand Is Your Secret Weapon

In today’s candidate-driven market, your employer brand matters just as much as your product or service. Candidates are researching you before they apply – checking your reviews and social media presence, for example.

A few quick wins:

  • Show off your team culture on LinkedIn.
  • Ask current employees to share authentic stories about working for you.
  • Make your job descriptions sound human, not robotic.

It’s all about standing out for the right reasons.

Why Partnering With a Recruiter Still Makes Sense

In a complex hiring landscape, many UK employers are turning (or returning) to recruitment partners for support – he’s why:

A good recruitment agency doesn’t just send over CVs. They act as an extension of your team providing salary benchmarking, candidate insights and guidance on how to position your roles competitively.

They know what candidates are asking for, what your competitors are offering and how to sell your brand authentically.

Looking Ahead

Hiring in the remainder of 2025 and through into 2026 will continue to evolve, probably faster than most of us expect. The businesses that thrive will be the ones that adapt, communicate and partner strategically.

That could mean modernising job adverts (and job descriptions), embracing flexible working, or leaning on expert recruiters to do the legwork.
