Electrical Assembly & Test Technician

Location: Factory-Based, Bedfordshire | Department: Electrical | Salary: £16-18 PH

The Opportunity

Shepherd Stubbs are recruiting on behalf of an established specialist engineering business for an Electrical Assembly & Test Technician to join its electrical engineering team.

This is a hands-on and varied role supporting the electrical build, wiring and testing of complex industrial machinery. The successful candidate will be involved in complete machine wiring, functional testing, fault-finding and general electrical support across the manufacturing site.

The role would suit an experienced electrical technician who enjoys practical engineering, problem-solving and working on bespoke machinery within a collaborative production environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Wire and connect complete electrical systems across industrial machinery, including:
  • Sensors
  • Motors
  • Actuators
  • Electrical interconnects
• Carry out functional testing, I/O checks and basic electrical fault-finding before the commissioning stage.
• Verify signal paths and help validate safe machine operation prior to software upload and HMI integration.
• Read and work from electrical schematics, layout drawings and structured Bills of Materials (BOMs).
• Support electrical installation work around the factory, including lighting circuits, distribution boards and equipment upgrades.
• Assist with new machinery installations and electrical improvement projects within production areas.
• Work collaboratively with other departments throughout the machine build process, including cable routing, alignment and system integration.
• Maintain high standards of safety, organisation and workmanship.
• Help deliver consistent, professional-quality electrical builds and test results.

Skills & Experience

The successful candidate will ideally have:

• A solid background in machine wiring, industrial electrical assembly or electrical engineering.
• Strong ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and wiring documentation.
• Practical experience working with a variety of:
  • Control devices
  • Drives
  • Sensors
  • Motors
  • DOL starters
  • VFD configurations
• Confidence identifying and resolving electrical faults during machine build and testing.
• The flexibility to move between workshop-based machinery build and wider electrical support activities.
• A positive, practical and solutions-focused approach.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.
• High standards of workmanship and attention to detail.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

• Previous electrical installation experience within an industrial, commercial or domestic environment.
• Recognised electrical qualifications, such as 18th Edition or equivalent.
• Exposure to automation systems, PLC/HMI architecture or drive commissioning tools.
• Experience within food machinery, process equipment, OEM manufacturing or a similar engineering environment.

Working Hours

The position is contracted at 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Standard breaks include:

• Morning: 10-minute break, 10:00am–10:10am
• Lunch: 30-minute break, 1:00pm–1:30pm

Typical working pattern:

• Monday: 7:30am–1:00pm / 1:30pm–4:00pm
• Tuesday: 7:30am–1:00pm / 1:30pm–4:30pm
• Wednesday & Thursday: 7:30am–1:00pm / 1:30pm–5:00pm
• Friday: 7:30am–12:00pm

Additional overtime may be available.

Overtime

Overtime is generally available and is paid at 1.5x the standard hourly rate for Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings.

Employees are expected to work a reasonable amount of overtime when requested by their Supervisor or Manager.

Salary/rate of pay: Competitive and dependent on experience.
