The Real Reasons Recruiters Reject Candidates (that no one tells you)

Introduction
If you’ve ever been rejected for a role and told “we’ve gone with other candidates,” you’re not alone and you’re probably none the wiser. The truth is, most candidates aren’t given the real feedback that could actually help them land the next opportunity.
Behind every rejection, there are usually a handful of clear, recurring reasons that recruiters see every day, but rarely spell out. Not because they don’t want to help, but because the reality is often more detailed (and sometimes more honest) than a standard response allows.
In this blog, we’re pulling back the curtain on what really happens behind the scenes, so you can avoid the common pitfalls and give yourself the best possible chance of securing your next role.
Let’s be honest, most rejection emails are vague, polite and not particularly helpful. “We’ve decided to move forward with other candidates” doesn’t tell you much and it certainly doesn’t help you improve. But behind the scenes, there are usually very clear reasons why candidates don’t make it through – and they’re often fixable.
Clarity
One of the biggest issues we see is lack of clarity. CVs that are too generic, full of responsibilities but light on results, make it difficult for recruiters to quickly understand your value. If we can’t immediately see what you’ve achieved, it’s much harder to put you forward with confidence.
Communications
Another common factor is poor communication during the process. Delayed responses, vague answers, or a lack of engagement can raise red flags. From a recruiter’s perspective, if communication is inconsistent early on, it creates doubt about how reliable you’ll be further down the line – especially when clients are moving quickly.
Expectations
Then there’s misalignment on salary or expectations. This isn’t always about asking for too much, it’s more about transparency. If your expectations change midway through the process, or don’t match what was initially discussed, it can stall or completely derail an application.
Preparation
We also see candidates fall short due to lack of preparation. Turning up to interviews without a clear understanding of the role, company, or even your own motivations is more common than you’d think. Hiring managers are looking for genuine interest, not just availability.
Decision-making
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, there’s indecisiveness. Taking too long to make a decision, hesitating when it matters most can lead to missed opportunities. In a competitive market, timing is everything.
The Good news?
These are all things within your control. Small changes – a clearer CV, better communication, more preparation – can make a huge difference. And from our side, we’d always rather give honest feedback and help you improve than see you miss out on roles you’re more than capable of landing.
